Broken Glass Assignment Instructions/Requirments

Step 1:
• _Create a new document and name it “Broken Glass Text”
• _Document size is 11in x 8.5in.
• _Go to “Layer” and select “New Background from Layer” then fill the background with black with your paint bucket tool.

Step 2:
• _Create a new layer (Select “Layer” then “New”)
• _Change your color to white and type your one word in the center alignment.

***(YOUR WORD MUST BE AN ADJECTIVE DESCRIBING YOURSELF)***

• _Choose a Bold Font, anything that is legible and type in all caps
• _Once you have your word typed, right click on the text layer in your layers panel and select rasterize text

Step 3:
• _Use your Polygonal Lasso Tool and create a triangle on the letter and use your Move Tool to pull it to give it a simple shattered look.
• _Repeat this around the letters but remember not to over do it.
• _Repeat this concept on every letter to complete the shattered effect on each letter.
• _Choose different angles to break it up and use different sizes to cut out.

Step 4:
• _The next step is to create the texture on the letters you just cut out.
• _File open and open your saved image with the “Rough” or “Scratched” texture.
• _Drag this onto your project. Hit Command T and scale it just to cover your word top to bottom, left to right.
• _Once scaled, go to your blending options and change the “Blend Mode” to “Multiply”

This will put the texture into your text and remove the additional portion of the image.
Step 5:
• _Select the text layer on your layers panel and choose your magic wand. Hold down Shift and select the majority, not all of your cut outs you created on your letters.
• _Once you have each cut out piece selected, Hit Control J to duplicate the layer.
• _On the duplicate text layer, go to Layer, Layer Style, Outer Glow, change the color to black and Opacity to 100% and “Blend Mode” to Normal
• _Change the “Spread” to 10 and the Size to 40 (you can play around with this)
• _You can also add a drop shadow but this may affect the overall visual appeal.

Step 6:
• _Next we will add the shatter effect of broken glass to your text.
• _File- Open, open the Smashed Glass Image. Drag it on to your project file.
• _Control T and scale it to cover your text again like the texture image did.
• _Upon scaling and formatting it to the text, Change the Blend Mode to Screen.
• _You can adjust the glass to how much you want exploding.

SUGGESTIONS:

Play around this concept and add color light effect on the text to create a more visual design to your smashed text. Do not be afraid to change the color of the texture image as well. Do not settle for the basic design, as I want you to explore and come up with your own individual design.
